St. Alexey Chapel at the River Station.
According to the legend, the bishop Alexey in 1357 coming from the Golden Orda where
he cured Khan wife Taidula from blindness with the help of the prayer, visited the future site of Samara. Alexey was
astonished by the beauty of the local nature. He predicted appearance of a big town there. In 1586 on that place the
fortress Samara was based, and Prelate Alexey became the Holly Patron of Samara. In the memory of Prelate Alexey many
chapels, wooden and stone, were erected. The first Chapel stood outside Samara fortress near Preobrazhensky Male Monastery.
Later the Chapel was ruined and it was moved to another place.
In the end of the XVIII century the Chapel appeared inside the town. It was moved closer to the Volga river, to the embankment. This third chapel was two storied and made of stone. However, the chosen place was unlucky. During spring floods the building suffered from water. In summer 1872 the Sity Duma decided to move the Chapel to not flooded place. Prelate Alexey Chapel was built by the 900th anniversary of Christening of Russia. The foundation was laid on the 15th of July, 1888. The Chapel was built according to the project of Samara architect A.A. Scherbacheva in Russian style. It was made of red bricks. In the 30s the Chapel was destroyed. Restoration of the chapel was started due to the initiative of the orthodox brotherhood in honor of Prelate Alexey. In 1995 public council was organized. Its members were famous people in Samara, such as Limansky, Soifer, Avetisyan. In Moscow a unique icon of Prelate Alexey was painted specially for the Chapel. The author of the project of the Chapel is Samara architect Alexey Melentiev. On the 31 of May 1998 the Chapel was dedicated.
